North Oakland Branch Library
As a young girl growing up in this neighborhood, Alternier Cook has fond memories of spending time at the local library, which she could easily walk to after school. Residents had several locations to choose from to access books and information, but after several closures and location changes, there was a four-decade absence of this vital neighborhood institution. Cook tells the story about the importance of access to information in the Black community and how several other longtime residents formed the Friends of Hoover-Durant Public Library that you can hear on the tour.
